An electric fence, often used to keep animals confined to a pasture, can be powered by a 12 V car battery. The voltage is increased to around 1 kV using a DC-DC Converter and the output from the DC-DC converter is applied between a wire that runs along the top of the fence and earth ground. An animal, poking its nose through the top of the fence receives an electric shock and learns to stay back. People, on the other hand, don’t always learn as easily. This video demonstrates electrical insulation in action and how to have fun with DC-DC converters and an electric fence.
